What makes a resume template ATS-friendly?

An ATS-friendly resume template is a single-column layout an applicant tracking system can read top to bottom without scrambling your content: standard section headings (Experience, Education, Skills), real selectable text rather than an image, and no tables, sidebars, text boxes, or icons standing in for words.
